Google is set to simplify comparison shopping with a new AI-powered tool in Chrome called “tab compare.” This innovative feature aims to summarize product data from various open tabs into a single, unified view, potentially transforming how users shop online.

How Tab Compare Works?

Tab compare uses generative AI to pull product details from the tabs you have open and compile them into a table. This allows users to view different products side-by-side on one page, streamlining the often cumbersome process of switching between tabs to compare prices, features, and other attributes.

Potential Impact and Limitations

While the tool promises to be incredibly useful, it might also pose a threat to websites that specialize in collecting and comparing product information, especially independent publishers struggling for visibility on Google. Additionally, there is some skepticism about Google’s ability to accurately capture all the finer details of various products.

The tables created by tab compare are limited to 10 items. According to Google spokesperson Joshua Cruz, this limit exists because the column layout doesn’t scale well beyond that number. The specific attributes that the tool pulls into the table will vary depending on the product category.

Future Applications

Currently, tab compare is focused on shopping, but Google has broader plans for this tool. Parisa Tabriz, Chrome VP, mentioned that future versions might be able to compare other types of information, such as travel details or university data. This could expand the utility of tab compare beyond shopping, making it a versatile tool for various comparison needs.

Launch and Availability

Tab compare will be available in the US on Chrome for desktop in the coming weeks, according to a blog post by Tabriz. In addition to tab compare, Google is rolling out other AI-powered features for Chrome, including a Circle to Search-like feature.

Summary of Key Features

  • Generative AI: Compiles product data from open tabs into a single table.
  • Unified View: Allows users to compare multiple products side-by-side.
  • Limitations: Tables are capped at 10 items; specific attributes depend on the product category.
  • Future Applications: Potential expansion to compare travel information, university details, and more.
  • Launch Timeline: Expected to roll out in the US for Chrome desktop users within a few weeks.
