Two ambulance workers from the South Western Ambulance Service have been arrested in connection with the deaths of six adults in Wiltshire. Police confirmed the arrests followed a major investigation launched in 2023. Both suspects, accused of gross negligence manslaughter, have since been released on bail pending further inquiries.
Arrests and Allegations
Wiltshire Police said the two individuals – a man in his 30s and a 59-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter. The man also faces four additional counts of ill-treatment or wilful neglect by a care worker.
Detective Chief Inspector Phil Walker, from the force’s major crime team, said:
“We can confirm a major investigation is under way relating to several adult deaths in and around Wiltshire. This investigation has been ongoing since an initial report was made in 2023 and detailed inquiries have been undertaken since to ascertain the facts.”
Ambulance Service Response
A spokesperson for the South Western Ambulance Service said an internal investigation began as soon as concerns were raised. The two staff members were immediately suspended from duties involving patient care, and one has since left the trust.
The service added:
“We would like to reassure people that this is an isolated situation and there is no ongoing risk to patients. Please continue to call 999 in a life-threatening emergency.”
Ongoing Investigation
Wiltshire Police confirmed that both suspects have been released on bail while further investigations continue. No additional details about the deceased patients have been released at this stage.
