Two Greggs branches in Newcastle city centre have been granted permission to open 24 hours a day, despite concerns from police and health officials that the move could fuel crime and unhealthy eating.
Late-Night Trading Approved
Newcastle Council’s licensing committee approved the bakery chain’s application for its Grainger Street and Neville Street stores to trade around the clock. The decision comes after Northumbria Police objected, warning that the outlets could become a magnet for late-night revellers and contribute to anti-social behaviour.
Measures to Address Concerns
Greggs assured the council it would introduce a series of safeguards to prevent problems. These include employing two door supervisors between 10pm and 5am, and equipping some staff with body cameras. The bakery argued these measures would ensure the premises did not add to city-centre crime.
Public health officials also raised concerns, suggesting longer opening hours could contribute to obesity. However, councillors noted that other outlets, including a nearby McDonald’s, already operate 24/7.
Committee’s Ruling
In its decision notice, the committee described Greggs as a “nationally recognised, reputable and established operator” which had gone beyond standard expectations to mitigate potential issues. It added that most incidents reported at the two branches occurred outside late-night refreshment hours and often involved staff as victims rather than perpetrators.
The panel concluded it was not fair to penalise operators for responsibly reporting crime.
A Broader Trend?
The approval raises the possibility that other late-night food outlets in Newcastle could seek similar licences. Greggs, which has more than 2,300 stores nationwide, has been testing extended opening hours as it seeks to expand its reach beyond the traditional breakfast and lunchtime trade.
