As OpenAI rolls out its highly realistic voice mode for ChatGPT, concerns are emerging about the potential emotional impact on users. The company recently issued a cautionary note, warning that this humanlike voice interface could lead users to form emotional attachments with the AI, a development that could have far-reaching consequences.

In a detailed safety analysis released today, OpenAI highlighted several risks associated with its new GPT-4o model, particularly focusing on the voice mode. The “system card” for GPT-4o, a technical document that outlines the potential dangers of the model, includes concerns about users becoming emotionally reliant on the AI due to its lifelike voice interactions.

This issue of emotional attachment was observed during stress testing, or “red teaming,” of GPT-4o. Researchers noted instances where users expressed sentiments that suggested a deep emotional connection with the AI. Phrases like “This is our last day together” were recorded, indicating that some users might start to view the AI as more than just a tool.

The voice mode, designed to enhance the user experience with swift responses and the ability to handle interruptions, has already drawn comparisons to real human interactions. However, this anthropomorphism—where users perceive AI as human—might lead them to trust the AI more, even when it provides incorrect information. Over time, this could affect users’ real-world relationships, potentially diminishing their need for human interaction.

Joaquin Quiñonero Candela, who leads preparedness at OpenAI, acknowledges the dual nature of these effects. While the emotional connection could positively impact lonely individuals or those needing to practice social skills, it also presents significant risks. OpenAI plans to closely monitor how users interact with the voice mode to better understand these dynamics.

Another concern is the potential for “jailbreaking” the AI through its voice interface. By using specific audio inputs, there is a risk that the AI could bypass its restrictions, potentially leading to impersonation or other manipulative behaviors. OpenAI has also observed cases where the AI’s voice adapted to sound like the user, raising further ethical questions.

The broader AI community is also paying attention. Google DeepMind, in a paper released earlier this year, discussed the ethical challenges posed by advanced AI assistants. The ability of these systems to mimic human language and interaction creates a sense of intimacy that could lead to complex emotional entanglements.

Users of chatbots like Character AI and Replika have reported feeling emotionally entangled with their AI counterparts, sometimes leading to antisocial behaviors. A recent TikTok video, which garnered nearly a million views, highlighted one user’s apparent addiction to an AI chatbot, using it even during a movie in a theater.

As AI continues to evolve and blur the lines between human and machine interaction, companies like OpenAI are being urged to tread carefully.
